McPherson High soccer coach Jim Post said that Emporia wasn’t a typical first-round playoff opponent.
The Bullpups were hoping to ease their way into the second round of the Class 5-1A regional, but there was nothing easy about Tuesday’s 1-0 victory at McPherson Stadium.
Erin O’Connor’s 25-yard bomb with 13:32 left in the first half provided the game’s only scoring, as the Bullpups now move on to second-round play here Thursday, hosting Buhler. The action begins at 6 p.m. at McPherson Stadium.
“That was a great win for us. Emporia is good,” said Post, whose team is now 13-3-1. “We had probably the hardest first game. They’ve beaten Topeka Hayden, who is the No. 4 seed, and they’ve beaten some other good teams, while being close in some other ones.”
The Bullpups basically controlled the ball for the most part, and came away with a 7-2 advantage in shots. The MHS defense was like a blanket, as the Spartans never really got any kind of serious rush at Bullpup goalie Kelsie Sorenson.
“I think the first 10 minutes of the game was so important,” Post said. “They usually throw 10 people up and score a goal and then go back. They’ve won a lot of their games 1-0 or 2-1. I told the girls that if we won the first 10 minutes or didn’t give up a goal, we’d win the game.”
Post said Ashley Janda had an oustanding game. “I thought that was her best game,” he said. “I thought she won a lot of balls and I thought OC (O’Connor) made some great passes. We did a lot of nice things tonight. That was one of our best games.”

MHS now has a rematch with Buhler, which was a 2-0 winner over Topeka West. The teams met here April 29 with the Bullpups taking a 2-1 victory in double overtime.
